Cru U14s at TRU 7s Final

On a cold wet Sunday morning the two Cru U14 sevens teams return to Fletcher’s Fields for the final weekend of the 3 weekend series. Going into Sunday the Cru teams were placed first and second in the pool play with a final pool game before the championship playoffs.

The Lancers started the day with a convincing win against Toronto Metro 1, 31-7 with tries from 5 different players.

The Knights team played the strong Oshawa vikings who dominated the match 6 tries to 1.

Moving on to the playoff the Lancers were placed 1st and the Knights has dropped to 4th. This caused the two Cru teams to face each other in the first semi-final.

imgp5860The Knights put up a great display, dominating possession for the first 5 minutes. The Knights eventually gave up possession and despite a valiant defense, the Lancer offense, speed and width broke through with an end result of 7 tries to 1 for the Lancers.

The Knights then played for 3rd place against a Barrie side boosted with a few Toronto Metro players. The Knights dominated play for a 5 to 1 tries victory securing the 3rd place finish.

The Lancers moved on to the championship game undefeated but down an number of players due to injuries. Oshawa started the game strong with a quick breakaway try. The game was very tight with tries going back and forth with strong offensive runs by both teams.

imgp5909At half time it was a nail-biting 3-3 tie with all to play for. In the second half 2 Cru players went down injured and Oshawa were up 4 tries to 3. After an injury delay and moving to a new field for the last 3 minutes Oshawa scored another quick try making us 5-3 down. With 2 minutes to play we scored two quick tried to draw the game 5-5 at full time. It was agreed to play an additional 5 minutes of play to decide the championship. Despite having some good chances, Oshawa’s offense broke through a number of times scoring twice in the 1st half of extra time. Oshawa sealed the championship with a third try in the second half with an 8 tries to 5 final score.

It was a great day of rugby with Cru playing first class 7s against tough opposition and finishing 2nd and 3rd overall out of 8 teams. We are looking forward to the Ontario 7s Championships in Guelph next Saturday to finish the season.
