Here is the message from Rugby Ontario:
Rugby Ontario has seen fit to propose a couple changes to the overall structure.
1/ Eliminate the Championship Division. As a result, we will increase the number of teams in the Premiership division. We will look to regionalize the premiership division to allow for less travel and more rugby. The criteria for entering a team in to the division will need to be discussed.
Reasoning – A discrepancy in the level of competition in the Championship division. This model will allow clubs that have the necessary numbers to compete for an entire season to do so. Hopefully this will strengthen the level of competition, which will eliminate major score discrepancies which may have been experienced last year.
The remaining clubs will be included in a Festival structure same as last year. This division will cater to clubs who are primarily focused on growing this age grade in their respective regions. Clubs will be free to combine with other clubs, or to miss some festivals based on week to week availability of players.
2/ Conduct Premiership season between May and July. Eliminate summer-long commitment to help strengthen commitment levels.
Reasoning – The season is too long and the commitment level of the parents and athletes is not where it needs to be for the majority of clubs. Giving parents the month of August off will hopefully encourage participants and their parents to stay involved for the duration of the season and take holidays after rugby is over.
Please note that there is always the opportunity to add more rugby in August. We can continue to schedule festivals throughout August same as last year.
3/ U14 Girls. There has been some interest for U14 girls fixtures throughout the summer. My aim is to link this aspect with the U14 boys festivals if possible.
