U16 ‘SELECTS’ vs John Kyrle School (UK Tour), 17th July

John Kyrle School overpowers the Crusader Tiger Stripes

Monday saw the Crusaders “Selects” team take on the touring-team, visiting from south-west England. In the impressive Tiger stripe jerseys for the first time for many, Cru shot out from the gate, cannons-blazing. Deklan Williamson capitalized on a loose ball. Surging up the middle and quick hands from the ensuing breakdown saw Jarrett-Parsons cross for the opening score.

The tourists – clearly rattled by the early pressure – consolidated,  and played some great hit/off-load rugby to apply pressure, yet keep possession.  By wearing down the valiant Cru defense – they were able to cross the line a few times to pull out a half time lead.  Crusaders played with much more vigour in the second-half.  Applying greater pressure onto a visibly wilting set of English-players (not used to the heat and humidity). Crusaders were camped in the opposition 22 for long periods, and finally got reward with a superb half-break by Mitch-White, from what looked to be a broken play, who popped to Luke-Englebrecht, to crash over.

Final score 12-22 to the visitors, but it had been a really-solid contest for our guys- who (hopefully) took a lot of key learning points from the game. Post match-social was great fun.  Tiago-Santos was picked as Crusader’s man-of-the-Match with some powerful breaks from full-back.  Great Job Guys.

The game was followed by dinner, birthday cake (x2), awards and speeches. A great touring experience for our guests and the Cru boys. Thank you to all families who brought food and drink contributions for the dinner and a special thanks to Andrea Williamson and her team of mums and to Kevin Trotman (king of the ‘Q) for putting it all together (again).
