The Finals!

ARGENTINA V NEW ZEALAND

[table “107” not found /]

Records will tumble at Stade de France, when two triple champions, New Zealand and South Africa, face one another for the Webb Ellis Cup.

The Springboks have never lost a final, and are looking to become only the second side to win back-to-back titles. The All Blacks have already set one record – this is their fifth final appearance. Their only defeat at this stage was in 1995, against South Africa.

Will Jordan, meanwhile, could become the first player to score nine tries in a single men’s tournament.

Just 24 hours earlier, losing semi-finalists Argentina and England – two more sides with points to prove after contrasting defeats – will face one another in the bronze final.

This is how the semi-finals finals at Rugby World Cup 2023 unfolded.

ARGENTINA V NEW ZEALAND

After Jonah Lomu and Adam Ashley-Cooper, add Will Jordan. He became the third player to score a hat-trick in a men’s Rugby World Cup semi-final as New Zealand beat Argentina 44-6 at Stade de France on a drizzly, slippery Friday evening.

With his 73rd-minute final touchdown, Jordan joined a second exclusive club. His name now sits alongside Lomu, Bryan Habana and Julien Savea as players with eight tries at a single men’s tournament.

Between the winger’s first and second tries, in the 11th and 62nd minute, Mastercard Player of the Match Jordie Barrett, Shannon Frizell – with two – and Aaron Smith also scored in a blizzard.

Frizell’s second and Smith’s try came in the first nine minutes of the second half, as New Zealand, already 20-6 in front at the end of a dominant opening period, simply eased away from the frustrated Pumas, who could only muster two Emiliano Boffelli penalties in response.

And the reason for Argentina’s frustration was clear. They had started brightly enough, running through the phases in attack, only to crash repeatedly into the All Blacks’ impenetrable defensive wall and fall into a devastating counter-trap.

ENGLAND V SOUTH AFRICA

Handré Pollard’s ice-cool 50m penalty two minutes from time saw the defending champions take the lead against England for the first time, and was enough to see them through to the Rugby World Cup final next Saturday.

That’s the strapline to Saturday’s second tense semi-final, which ended 16-15. But the story – as it had been against France six days’ previously – was a tale of two benches.

England’s starting pack had achieved parity and better against South Africa. But, when RG Snyman came on, and most of the two front rows were replaced, the Springboks suddenly had the upper hand.

Four penalties and a drop goal from captain Owen Farrell had given England a 15-6 lead heading into the final quarter. It seemed, in a suffocating, rain-sodden match, to be more than enough.

Four scrum-penalties to the Springboks later, with the champions’ front row now very much on top, Snyman scored the game’s only try with 11 minutes left. Pollard – who had replaced Manie Libbok earlier than expected in a nod toward South Africa’s earlier struggles – converted, to pull them to within a penalty of victory. It still wasn’t enough.

But he would get one last shot at goal, in the 78th minute, after England conceded one more scrum penalty.

It was all he needed to break England hearts and give the Springboks a chance of claiming back-to-back titles.

And so to the Quarter-Finals

(Central European Summer Time)

Quote of the Day – ‘Playing South Africa in Paris is wonderful, magnificent’

“It certainly wasn’t easy. There was once or twice when I was roaring to Mack [Hansen] on the sidelines because I had forgotten one of the roles the winger is supposed to do.
Ireland centre Garry Ringrose on ending up on the wing in their last match against Scotland

“We’re always nervous before this kind of match. It would be a lie to say there’s no tension. Playing against them, in Paris, at Stade de France, in a World Cup quarter-final, is magnificent, it’s wonderful.”
France coach Fabien Galthié is excited about playing the defending champions in Paris

“I’ve got 13 people staying in my house in Toulon.”
Dan Biggar – presumably talking about his family – when asked about the traveling Welsh support in France

“How many tries in how many games? Three in three? I like that.”
All Blacks coach Ian Foster likes the sound of Will Jordan’s try-scoring record against Ireland

“He’s had that from early on. Even to the point where I’ve had to turn around and say ‘I’m going to have to say something to this guy, he’s gobbing off at me. I’ve been here 10 years and he’s gobbing off at me.’”
Joe Marler says Harlequins and England team-mate Marcus Smith was happy to bark orders at team-mates from a young age

“First and foremost I’m proud to be a Fijian but I am also proud of the so-called developing nations, pushing for the global game, how we can improve it and get more opportunities, how we break that barrier down.”
Fiji head coach Simon Raiwalui on flying the flag for Fiji as well as other nations who are trying to break into contention for the quarter-finals of a World Cup.

Crusaders to show World Cup Matches at the Club

Kickoff: Friday 8th August at 3:15 pm EDT

As we come to the final countdown for the start of the Pool matches the warm up games produced some interesting results.

It was a weekend of ups and down for all the top-ranked teams except Ireland, who remain at number one, Scotland who stay fifth following a 33-6 win over Georgia, and Wales who remain in 10th, their lowest-ever position going into a Rugby World Cup, having sat out the last round of matches.

Twickenham Stadium was the scene of not one but two momentous matches less than 24 hours apart as the All Blacks suffered the worst defeat in their history on Friday night before Fiji stunned England on Saturday.

Kickoff: Friday 8th August at 3:15 pm EDT

Crusaders Receives $160,00 Trillium Resilient Communities Fund Grant for Volunteer Support

The Crusaders Rugby Club has been awarded a $160,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) to support and strengthen the club’s volunteer programs. This funding will help address one of the most significant and lasting impacts of COVID-19 on the club: the challenge of attracting, supporting, and retaining the volunteers needed to deliver high-quality community rugby programming.

Post-pandemic, the club has focused heavily on rebuilding membership levels and diversifying programming and revenue streams. While participants have returned in strong numbers, the volunteers required to coach, manage, and operate programs have not returned at the same pace. As a result, a smaller group of dedicated volunteers has been carrying an unsustainable workload—leading to burnout, reduced retention, and barriers to offering the full breadth of programming the community demands.

This OTF-funded project will directly address these challenges through targeted investments in rebuilding volunteer capacity. The initiative will focus on attracting new volunteers, supporting and retaining existing volunteers, and implementing sustainable systems and structures that reduce reliance on a small number of time-stretched individuals. The project will also help modernize volunteer management processes and build long-term resilience in program delivery.

“This grant will be transformational in rebuilding and developing volunteerism within the club,” said Chris Tudor Price, President of the Crusaders Rugby Club. “Community sports clubs—and rugby clubs in particular—are entirely reliant on volunteerism to survive. As our club has grown dramatically since 2019 in membership, programming, and operational complexity, we’ve reached an inflection point. We need immediate supports for the volunteers we have, and a more systematic volunteer program that encourages, trains, and sustains a larger base of coaches, managers, directors, and other essential volunteers.”

“We are enormously grateful for the support of MPP Stephen Crawford and the Ontario Trillium Foundation,” added Tudor Price. “This funding will allow us to address volunteer-capacity challenges both in the short and long term. I also want to thank our board of directors, who have worked tirelessly over several years to grow, diversify, and operationalize the club as a sustainable going concern. It has been a massive team effort to place the Crusaders in a position to be eligible for OTF support.”

The Crusaders Rugby Club remains Canada’s largest community rugby club, providing programming for more than 1,400 participants annually across Oakville, Halton, and the western GTA. Strengthening its volunteer base is essential to supporting this growth and ensuring the club continues to provide accessible, safe, and high-quality rugby opportunities for youth and adults of all ages.

About the Ontario Trillium Foundation

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Government of Ontario and one of Canada’s leading grantmakers. OTF invests in community-based initiatives that build healthy and vibrant communities across the province. Through its various funding streams, OTF supports projects that strengthen organizations, enhance community wellbeing, and create lasting impact. In 2023–24, OTF invested more than $115 million into 644 projects and partnerships to help Ontarians thrive.
